COLLABORATORS
The Centre for Trauma Sciences collaborates with some of the world's leading researchers in trauma science, as well other health organisations, the military and industry. A variety of institutions support our research program, including Barts Charity, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the European Commission (7th Framework Programme), and the Wellcome Trust.
C4TS is a key part of the International Trauma Research Network (INTRN). INTRN is a an academic collaboration of Level-1 trauma centres across the U.K, Europe and the United States that aims to accelerate the conduct and translation of trauma sciences research. The network is establishing a global research platform supporting public-funded and commercial multi-national trials in trauma. As well as delivering impactful international translational research, INTRN supports global education projects to ensure the rapid translation of its research, into clinical practice and into healthcare policy for the optimised treatment of traumatic injury.
C4TS is based at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), which is one of the U.K's top 7 institutes for medical education. SMD is one of the schools of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). Within SMD, there are a number of research institutes - we fall under the administration of the Blizard Institute, which has world class laboratory infrastructure.
Barts Health NHS Trust is home to the Royal London Hospital Major Trauma Centre, Europe's busiest MTC, and they are our major clinical partner.
Our industry partners have played a critical role in facilitating some of our important discoveries. In particular, the TEM Group has provided the use of their Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM®) technology and Haemonetics has provided their TEG® platform. Each of these analyse trauma patients' functional clotting response to both injury and transfusion.
In April 2010, the greater London area became the first area of the UK to implement a regional trauma system for its population of 10 million people. C4TS takes a lead role in supporting research and innovation across all four of London's networks.
NaTRIC is a new (2018) trauma research collaborative. It is a trainee led initiative to support doctors, nurses, paramedics and allied health professionals deliver national research projects.
C4TS conducted the UK’s first co-developed civilian-military Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) which was undertaken at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, as part of the CRYOSTAT study. We also provide pre-deployment training in trauma care and management to military personnel, and offer a MSc in Trauma Sciences which specialises in Military and Humanitarian practice.
