C4TS initiative shortlisted for Times' innovation award

September 2, 2016

After Trauma, the C4TS website established last year to support the recovery of trauma survivors, has been shortlisted for a Times Higher Education (THE) award.

The annual THE awards are often referred to as 'the Oscars of the UK higher education sector'. Hundreds of higher education institutions around the country nominate projects for awards across 20 categories.

AfterTrauma was nominated by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) for the award for Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology. This award recognises the innovative use of digital technology to improve an institution's teaching, learning or research activity. The Times announced yesterday that AfterTrauma had made the shortlist for this category.

Dr Karen Hoffman, who launched the site in April 2014, said "It is a great honor to be shortlisted for this prestigious award. AfterTrauma was the first website in the UK dedicated to helping survivors of major traumatic injury on their recovery journey.

Major trauma is already the commonest cause of loss of life under the age of 40 and affects over 17,000 people in England each year with an estimated additional 28, 000 people experiencing less severe injuries.  The burden of trauma is set to increase in the next 5 years and injury will be in the 2nd place in 2020 for 'life years lost' through premature death and disability.  Despite this there are few resources for survivors once they leave hospital.  AfterTrauma's listing in the THE shortlist will help improve the visibility of this neglected group of patients and medical research."

The THE award winners will be announced at a dinner and awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 24 November.
