Trauma Team @ South East Big Bang Fair

June 19, 2015

On Tuesday 30th June 2015 members of the Trauma Team will be attending this year’s South East Big Bang Fair at The South of England Showground, Ardingly, West Sussex RH17 6TZ. The event already has over 5,500 young people and their teachers signed up to attend. The Fair will showcase exciting science engagement activities from fields as diverse as medicine to engineering.

The C4TS trauma team will be taking our famous surgical simulator mannequin, which gives attendees the chance to practice a ‘damage control surgery’ – racing against time to clamp bleeding vessels in order to stent the dummy's intra-abdominal bleeds!

Alongside the mannequin, the team will also use ‘CLOT-PLUNK’. This model allows children to become familiar with the different components of blood clots. On top of this, the team is able to explain how this becomes dysfunctional in some trauma patients leading to the potential development of acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC). The team will also explain how we are continuing to recruit patients to the ACITII trial to investigate the development and underlying causes of ATC.

Later this year, we have an event planned that will highlight the different roles and professions involved in a trauma patient's journey through the hospital: from their admission to ED to outcome support that they receive following discharge. Please contact us if you'd like to be involved or want more information, we'd love to hear from you.
