In August of 2015, 42 students from around the world journeyed to London for the 4th Annual Trauma Sciences Summer School.
This exciting event is held between the first and second years of our MSc Trauma Sciences Study and provides an opportunity for the Masters Candidates to come to London, meet each other, and connect with C4TS’s renowned local and international Trauma Sciences MSc Faculty whilst engaging in a deep-dive trauma educational experience including various exciting hands-on activities.
This year the Barts and the London QMUL Trauma Sciences MSc students travelled from as far as Shenzhen in mainland China, Singapore, from the Commonwealth countries of Australia and Canada – and then closer to home from Nigeria, Sweden, the Netherlands. And last - but certainly not least - from all over the UK with great representation from Scotland and Ireland.
C4TS was honored to host a myriad of international and local guest speakers. Esteemed visiting faculty included:
- Teri Reynolds – The Lead for Trauma, Emergencies and Acute Care at The World Health Organization (WHO);
- Professor Sherry Wren – Director of Global Surgery at Stanford University;
- Professor Richard Gosselin – Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI) at the University of California San Francisco;
- Christos Giannou – former Lead Surgeon for the International Committee of the Red Cross/Red Crescent (ICRC) and primary author of the “War Surgery” Textbooks.
TraumaMasters Course Director Professor Susan Brundage enthuses:
“Our SuperStar TraumaMasters Faculty numbered greater than 40 and gave their all and more to the students! We achieved a 1:1 ratio of Faculty: Students, and you can’t get better than that for supporting optimal learning outcomes.
In addition to our international experts, C4TS lead Professor Brohi guided students in the Group Project and the Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences Course Co-Directors Peter Bates and Kash Akhtar contributed riveting lectures.”
The Class of 2015 - students from our MSc trauma sciences summer school
The TraumaMasters candidates complete many practical skills sessions. Surgical Workshops and Difficult Case Discussions occur at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The students also have an outstanding time learning from the London’s Air Ambulance Institute of Pre-hospital Education lead by Gareth Grier and participating in Stimulating Simulation Sessions at The Royal London Education Academy expertly led by Rosel Tallach.
Every year the TraumaMasters Gathering completes a Group Project. The Annual Group Project is a ‘secret mission’ which is revealed on Day 1 of the Summer Session. Then the entire group of students work together en masse for the next 2 weeks formulating a project plan. The challenging 2015 Summer School Project was “Create a Paediatric Trauma System for London for 2025” which the students presented as the Grand Finale to proceedings.
