Dr Grainne McKenna FRCS (SN)

I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Barts Health, specialising in Neurotrauma and Neuro-oncology.
The Royal London Hospital is one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in the UK and our specialist Neurotrauma Team looks after approximately 250 patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) per year. I joined the Neurotrauma Team in 2019 and established our weekly Head Injury MDT meeting, bringing together the extensive experience and expertise in the management of TBI across the trust. This forum promotes multidisciplinary communication to enhance clinical decision-making, with an earlier focus on prognostication and rehabilitation. A dedicated Neurotrauma governance system has evolved as part of this collaboration, which promotes team reflection and institutional learning, and provides a springboard for clinical research questions.
I completed my undergraduate training at Cambridge University, including an MA in Neurophysiology. After finishing clinical school and foundation training at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, I joined the neurosurgery training programme in North London in 2009. I have a great passion for learning and teaching which led me to pursue an MSc in Medical Education with UCL and The Royal College of Physicians in 2019. My MSc thesis was entitled 'Learning to manage uncertainty; a threshold concept in becoming a consultant neurosurgeon'.
Managing TBI is hugely challenging for clinicians as there are still many uncertainties about the effects of our medical and surgical interventions on patient's outcomes. TBI comprises a vast spectrum of conditions which makes it challenging to conduct useful clinical trials. Furthermore, our ability to translate the significance of scientific findings from animal models to the human brain is limited. This makes it a fascinating subject to explore as part of the Trauma Sciences Masters Programme.
