Dr Homa Arshad

Honorary Senior Lecturer at QMUL

I was appointed to Barts Health as a substantive consultant in March 2017, joining the awesome Pete Bates and excellent Paul Culpan as a pelvic and acetabular trauma surgeon. I have a keen interest in all trauma and a busy elective practice in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. I was appointed to my first substantive consultant post at Newcastle Hospitals in October 2015. After finishing fellowship I spent almost a year in practice there with the same specialty interests and represented my Trust at the Northern Trauma Network. On returning to London my first priority was to persuade the formidable Kash Akhtar to bring me on board as a Tutor for the Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc.

I graduated from Cambridge University and trained on the Percivall Pott Rotation. I worked also in New York and California in translational research methods as a medical student. Elective was spent in Salvador da Bahia in Brazil investigating operative emergencies, beautiful beaches and the fascinating local culture. I spent time in Norfolk as a trainee and close to completion was appointed as the senior revision hip fellow, working with John Nolan and Jim Wimhurst. I completed fellowships in Germany with Professor Raschke, Head of AO and in Denmark with Kjeld Sobelle who pioneered minimally invasive periacetabular osteotomy. My year as the pelvic and acetabular fellow at Barts Health was unforgettable, mostly for the right reasons.

I have worked in Hastings and Norwich briefly as a locum consultant and again took on this role at Barts Health prior to starting in Newcastle when Pete was stricken down with a minor injury whilst tackling a falling tree.

I am a current ATLS instructor and teach as faculty for AO. I recently returned to Newcastle as course convenor for the annual Cadaveric Advanced Techniques in Lower Limb Trauma course.

I am married to a very patient and capable man and we have two sons who are both obsessed with red meat and trees (are they bears?). I enjoy sailing, dancing and putting the world to rights. I have given up my fondness for leaving parties on the basis of a comprehensive social programme now that I have finally come home.
