Dr Karen Kwong

Honorary Professor

I am Chief of General Surgery at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre, Portland OR;  Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, Oregon Health and Science University; and Associate Program Director Surgery Residency OHSU.

My specialties are: Global Surgery, Surgical Education, General Surgery.Since completing my surgery residency training in 1995, I have pursued a passion for educating students and residents everywhere I have worked.  I have been an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor since 1996 and have served as an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Surgery. I am currently Supervisor for Global Surgery and Surgical Education Research of Surgery Residents and Medical Students at Oregon Health Sciences University.  I am also Lead Faculty and Supervisor of OHSU Surgery Residents and Trauma/Critical Care Fellows for International Medical Work / Working in Limited Resource Environments.

In 2008, I embarked on my first international surgery endeavor and quickly became committed to helping people after natural disasters and in underserved areas.  My passion for this work and continued commitment to being an educator led me to be a co-founder of a school for underprivileged earthquake refugees in Haiti, and I travel to Haiti twice each year with residents and students to provide medical and surgical care.
